ALBANY – A new report by the state comptroller found significant healthcare professional shortages in 16 rural counties, including Sullivan County.

Per Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli’s findings, the counties have a deficit in primary care, pediatric, and obstetrician and gynecologist (OBGYN) doctors, dentists, and mental health practitioners, with several having no pediatricians or OBGYN doctors at all.

State Assemblywoman Paula Kay (D, Rock Hill), said this the healthcare crisis in Sullivan County must be addressed.

“We all know that Sullivan County is a healthcare desert. We need to support the hospitals to help them to recruit physicians, healthcare workers, nurses, everybody, but, maybe this report will help build momentum toward solving the situation in the future,” she said.
