KINGSTON – The company that administers employee healthcare benefits for Ulster County government employees has been hit with a data breach and the workers were only recently notified of the breach of Alera Group’s computer systems, which occurred in August 2024. Alera was unable to confirm the level of the breach until April of this year.
Last week, Alera sent letters by mail to impacted county employees and is offering 24 months of complimentary credit monitoring through a third-party provider.
In an email to county staff, County Executive Jen Metzger called “inexcusable” the company’s failure to properly notify the county, which is self-insured, and its workers in a more timely manner, leaving the employees unprotected for 12 months.
