A farmhouse near Soham could soon be converted into a residential care home for children if plans are approved. A planning application has been put together to try and get permission to turn a five-bedroom house at Mere Engine Farm into a home for two to three children.

The plans have been put forward by Cambridgeshire County Council as part of its work to bring down ‘eye watering’ costs of children’s residential care the authority has previously said it is facing.

Planning documents set out how the home would be for children with the “most challenging behavioural need”, who need 24/7 care with eight carers proposed to be at the home over the course of a day.
