An Upstate New York man has been arrested for allegedly beating his girlfriend with a shovel.

WIVB reports Julian Taylor, 31, of Buffalo, is accused of brutally assaulting a woman in the city’s Lovejoy neighborhood. The incident occurred Thursday, July 31, shortly after 8 p.m., according to police reports.

Police say Taylor punched and hit the victim before grabbing a shovel to beat her head in. She remains hospitalized after reportedly suffering severe lacerations, skull fractures and brain bleeds.

The victim’s name has not been released. According to WIVB, she was identified as Taylor’s girlfriend.

Police said they were able to recover the shovel used in the alleged assault. Taylor is currently being held without bail on charges of first-degree assault and fourth-degree criminal pos
