The Canyon Fire in California has expanded to nearly 5,000 acres as conditions worsen. The blaze, which ignited around 1:30 p.m. on Thursday, is located near Lake Piru, straddling the border of Los Angeles County and Ventura County.
Initially reported at just 30 acres, the fire rapidly escalated to 1,500 acres. As of early Friday morning, it remains 0 percent contained. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.
Due to the fire's rapid growth, several areas have been placed under mandatory evacuation orders. Cal Fire has indicated that the fire poses an "immediate threat to life" as it spreads quickly eastward, driven by onshore winds. The flames are moving away from Lake Piru and into Los Angeles County.
The fire broke out on a particularly hot and dry day, with temperatures nearing 100 degrees. This extreme heat may have contributed to the fire's swift spread, according to the National Weather Service.
Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely as the fire develops. Further updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
