SPRINGFIELD, Mo. — The City of Springfield is hosting the annual Birthplace of Route 66 Festival this weekend, celebrating the Mother Road and Springfield's role in its history.

The festival kicks off Friday at noon with a classic car show and continues throughout Friday evening and all day Saturday.

The Birthplace of Route 66 Festival celebrates the anniversary of choosing the name for the historic highway. On April 30th, 1926, a telegram was sent from the Colonial Hotel in Springfield officially claiming "66".

Every year, The Birthplace of Route 66 Festival takes the city back to the heyday of the Mother Road when the journey was part of the adventure with classic car shows, music, food vendors and community.
