INDIANAPOLIS — You can now order a "blackout" license plate for your Indiana vehicle.

On Friday, Aug. 8, the Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV) started selling the new, minimalist plates.

The license plates are black with white letters and numbers .

The plates cost an additional $45, and you can personalize them for another $45 on top of that. If you want to get one before your current plate expires, you can order a blackout plate now. You'll just get a $9.50 replacement plate fee added to the bill.

You can order the new plates at your local BMV office or by ordering online.

BMV leaders introduced new "blackout plates" Monday, July 21. The plates were approved by state lawmakers during the last legislative session.

Money raised by the new plates is earmarked to improve services.
