When the Cubs last visited St. Louis, the Cardinals were reaching the nadir of their season. On June 23, after having defeated the Cubs for a second game in a row, the Cardinals were 44-36. At eight games over .500, they were a mere 2.5 games behind the then first place Cubs. The next day, the worm turned. A not great Cub pitching staff shutout the Cardinals twice in a row, sending them reeling. A portent of things to come. ‘Twas a tumble from which they have yet to recover, and quite possibly will not. After the disappointing Cubs series split, the Cardinals swept the Guardians.
