COLUMBIA, S.C. — Authorities say a child was taken to an area hospital after being hit by part of a passing vehicle while waiting on a school bus in Kershaw County.

The incident happened on Friday morning and involved an 11-year-old boy who was a student from North Central Middle School. The Kershaw County School District said the bus was not at the location when the incident occurred. The district added that the child was taken to an area hospital but was "awake and alert" at the time.

“Everybody thinks of school starting back look out around the schools. But it’s not just around the schools that we need to be careful of, it’s everywhere this was at a bus stop,” said Kershaw County Sheriff Lee Boan.
