SARASOTA, Fla. ( WWSB ) — Nathan Benderson Park is crediting its staff and medical team with saving the life of a competitor who suffered a heart attack during a race earlier this year.

On Feb. 23, Darrel Davidson, 71, of Vero Beach, collapsed from a heart attack just after crossing the finish line in a race at the park.

“I mean, if it didn’t happen halfway down the racecourse, who knows if they would have been able to get me to the paramedics in time,” Davidson said. “Any slight variation in the sequence of events and the outcome could’ve been the other direction.”

Two of Davidson’s teammates immediately rushed to help, getting him to the medical staff on site.
