MONROE, La. (KNOE) - On August 8, 1974, President Richard Nixon announced in a televised address that he would become the first president in American history to resign.

Impeachment proceedings were underway against him for his involvement in the Watergate scandal.

Nixon’s term ended just before noon the next day, August 9, when Vice President Gerald Ford was sworn in as the 38th president.
