However, the agreement is already prompting backlash in the state over the “Speedway Slammer” moniker attached to the project by federal officials. The moniker has become the subject of extensive discourse, given the role that Indianapolis-based IndyCar and the Indianapolis Motor Speedway play in the central Indiana economy.
The name drew a backlash from the IndyCar Series on Wednesday and also a response from Pato O’Ward, the only Mexican driver in the series. O’Ward’s car number was featured in an advertising image posted on social media by the Department of Homeland Security.
