GRAND FORKS — A storm that saw winds top 90 mph west of Grand Forks — and possibly included a tornado — pushed through greater Grand Forks and the region early Friday morning, Aug. 8, causing severe damage to the Thompson, North Dakota, grain elevator, downing trees and cutting power for some residents in Grand Forks.

A tornado warning was issued at 4:12 a.m. as the front hit Grand Forks with heavy rains and high winds. The tornado warning sirens were heard sounding at 4:20 a.m.

The line of storms essentially stretched entirely across the state, from the Canada border to the South Dakota border.
