LINCOLN, Neb. (KOLN) - According to the Nebraska Department of Education, in 2021, there were over 4,000 children who were experiencing homelessness in the Good Life State.

In Lincoln, the district said last school year, there were 853 students identified as homeless in their district; a staggering 40 percent of whom are staying in a shelter.

LPS said it’s the highest number of students since the homeless outreach’s inception in 2005.

Homeless outreach coordinator Efrain Jimenez said they go into those shelters to find students who aren’t already enrolled, to get them set up for the school year.

“By meeting with those families, and meeting with those students, we can address what those actual needs are,” Jimenez said.
