SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WCIA) -- A person is in the hospital after they were hit by a freight train in Springfield on Friday.
The pedestrian strike happened in the area of North Grand Avenue and 19th Street. Julie Plunk, PIO and Assistant Fire Chief for Springfield Fire Department, said one person was transported to the hospital by ambulance. Their condition is unknown.
Two fire engines and that ambulance responded to the scene around noon.
Springfield Police said on Facebook that the 10th Street railroad tracks are currently blocked by the train, which is stopped for the investigation and will remain blocked for "an extended period." Plunk estimated the blockage may last for 30 to 45 more minutes.
