PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) -- North Providence Town Councilor Stefano Famiglietti will be sworn in as District 4's new state senator Thursday.

The district, which contains parts of North Providence and Providence, has been vacant since April after the death of the late Senate President Dominick Ruggerio.

Famiglietti won Tuesday's special election against Republican Alex Asermely to succeed Ruggerio, who had held the seat since 1985. Before that, Famiglietti defeated three other Democrats in a July primary.

R.I. Secretary of State Gregg Amore will administer Famiglietti's oath of office at 4 p.m. in the Senate chamber.
