ATTLEBORO, Mass. (WPRI) -- Massachusetts leaders broke ground Friday on a new emergency department for Sturdy Memorial Hospital.

The expanded center will have 50 private emergency department rooms, a 12-bed behavioral health unit for patients experiencing mental health crises, two trauma bays, CT scanning and other imaging services.

"That's what makes today so exciting," said U.S. Sen. Ed Markey, who secured $2.85 million from the federal government for the project. "Everyone is going to receive first-class health care right here in the community."

The project in total will cost around $113 million. Some of the funding came from Sturdy Health, while the rest came from federal dollars and donations.

Massachusetts Congressman Jake Auchincloss was also in attendance at the ceremony.
