LINDALE, Texas — A family dog died and a 13-year-old was taken to the hospital after a fire destroyed a Smith County home Friday.

Lindale Fire Department Assistant Chief Troy Pritchard said the blaze happened on County Road 474. When firefighters arrived, the home was completely engulfed in flames. A car also burned during the fire.

A dog inside the home died as a result of the fire. The only known person in the home at the time was a 13-year-old, who was taken to the hospital as a precaution for smoke inhalation, Pritchard said.

A preliminary investigation revealed an overloaded electrical power strip within the area of where the fire started.

Pritchard said Smith County Fire Marshal's Office is investigating the cause of the fire.
