Opening tonight at the Muny is a unique production of “La Cage aux Folles.”

For those unfamiliar with the musical, or with the film “The Birdcage,” the story is about Georges and Albin, a gay couple that runs a drag club where Albin is one of the starring acts. When their son gets engaged to a girl whose dad is a conservative politician, Albin tries to hide that they’re gay by dressing in drag.

Perhaps since the musical is based on a French play and movie, the families involved have always been portrayed as white, but the Muny has made both of the families involved Black.

“This will be the first professional production anywhere that we’ve had a Black family,” says Michael James Scott, who will be playing Albin. “That is pretty incredible given where St. Louis sits.”
