The Boston Red Sox’s never-ending search for adequate catching depth continued on Friday.

Boston claimed catcher Ali Sánchez off waivers from the Toronto Blue Jays. The Red Sox had one open spot on their 40-man roster, meaning no subsequent move was made in order to complete the transaction, but one will need to be made in order to get him on the 26-man active roster since he’s out of options.

Carlos Narváez, who is dealing with knee soreness , could be headed toward the injured list.

Sánchez, 28, is the definition of a journeyman catcher, having spent time with the Blue Jays, Miami Marlins, St. Louis Cardinals, New York Mets, Chicago Cubs, Arizona Diamondbacks and Detroit Tigers organizations over the last five seasons, making big league appearances with the former four.
