CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The Mecklenburg Board of County Commissioners met this week to discuss the impacts of the Big Beautiful Bill on residents, focusing on potential Medicaid and SNAP benefit cuts .

About 416,000 Mecklenburg County residents receive Medicaid benefits, with approximately 31,000 potentially losing coverage under the proposed changes. An estimated 137,000 county residents receive SNAP benefits, and expanded work requirements could eliminate benefits for up to 17,000 residents .

If North Carolina withdraws from the SNAP program entirely, all 137,000 residents would lose benefits and Mecklenburg County would face $53 million in added expenses.

Robert Nesbit, chief of staff for Mecklenburg County's Consolidated Human Services Agency, said nothing is finalized.
