WASHINGTON — The Department of Justice's Antitrust Division filed a proposed settlement to resolve its case against Greystar Management Services , which manages almost a million rental units as the largest landlord in the country, including thousands in Charlotte.
The case says Greystar was sharing sensitive data with other major property management companies to raise rent prices using property software company RealPage's algorithms. Together, the companies were working to monopolize the rental market and ensure renters were forced to pay the prices they set. Greystar's actions are considered anticompetitive.
The federal case references a North Carolina lawsuit filed by Attorney General Jeff Jackson against RealPage, Greystar and other landlords. Jackson said the companies were colluding
