FORT MILL, S.C. — South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster is signaling a major change for the state’s Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) , and it’s drawing mixed reactions from shoppers .
In a social media post Wednesday, Governor McMaster said he plans to issue an executive order directing the Department of Social Services to place “common sense limits” on what can be purchased with SNAP benefits.
“America is getting healthy, and South Carolina will do her part,” the governor wrote.
The move comes months after lawmakers introduced the South Carolina SNAP Nutrition Integrity Act, which sought to ban candy and soft drinks from SNAP purchases. That proposal stalled in committee, but McMaster’s order could revive the push for stricter rules.
