Federal prosecutors have issued subpoenas to New York Attorney General Letitia James. The subpoenas are part of an investigation into her office's civil fraud case against President Donald Trump and a separate case involving the National Rifle Association (NRA).
Sources familiar with the matter confirmed the subpoenas were issued by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of New York. They are examining whether James and her office violated Trump's civil rights during their investigations.
James' office has been involved in a civil fraud case against Trump, which is currently under appeal. A court previously found Trump, his sons, and his business liable for inflating his net worth over a decade. The attorney general's office is also pursuing a case against the NRA, alleging that its former CEO, Wayne LaPierre, misused donor funds for personal luxuries. A jury determined that LaPierre owed over $4 million in damages.
A spokesperson for James described the subpoenas as a “weaponization of the justice system.” They stated, “Any weaponization of the justice system should disturb every American. We stand strongly behind our successful litigation against the Trump Organization and the National Rifle Association, and we will continue to stand up for New Yorkers’ rights.”
Abbe D. Lowell, James' personal attorney, criticized the subpoenas as a “dangerous escalation” and a blatant example of political retribution. He stated, “If prosecutors carry out this improper tactic and are genuinely interested in the truth, we are ready and waiting with the facts and the law.”
James has previously sued Trump multiple times over his policies and business practices. Trump is appealing a multimillion-dollar judgment against him, claiming that his financial statements, which allegedly inflated the value of his properties, were not misleading. He argues that any inaccuracies were minor and did not affect lending decisions.
The issuance of these subpoenas marks a significant development in the ongoing scrutiny of Trump and his associates by federal authorities. This investigation comes amid broader inquiries into Trump's actions during his presidency, including the Trump-Russia probe.
