COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KKTV) - The Colorado Springs Fire Department (CSFD) is mourning the loss of retired Captain Patrick Rogacki, who passed away on August 1 after a long battle against job-related cancer.

CSFD said Captain Rogacki’s illness was a result of work he did at Ground Zero following the September 11 attacks, serving as a Search Group Manager with Colorado Task Force 1 and spending “countless hours” in hazardous debris piles working to recover those who were lost.

According to CSFD, firefighters who are diagnosed with and die from job-related cancer are considered Line of Duty deaths, even after their retirement, because of the connection between their illness and the dangers they faced while serving the community.
