If it can figure out how, the city may jack up the tax rate on long-vacant properties.

The idea came from Alderman Michael Talbott as the Community and Economic Development Committee discussed blighted properties Thursday. Talbott said he'd like to explore gradually increasing property taxes on blighted vacant properties, giving the landowners more incentive to do something with them.
