NEWTON, Texas — A debris pile left unattended sparked a pasture fire along Highway 87 North in Newton on Friday afternoon, burning about an acre before it was brought under control.
The Newton Volunteer Fire Department said the blaze broke out around 2 p.m. across from Grace Bible Church. Three fire trucks and eight firefighters responded to the scene.
“Please use caution when burning as our area is getting very dry,” the department said in a statement. “The small rains are more hindrance than help.”
Officials said the fire was traced to an unattended debris pile. They are urging residents to notify the sheriff’s department of any significant controlled burns to help prevent similar incidents.
