A man who was arrested early Wednesday morning after allegedly punching a dog and then the dog’s owner said the incident started because the dog was off-leash and attacked his service dog.

In an interview with WABI , Dirk Weber, 34, who police described as a Penobscot County transient, said he broke up the fight between the dogs, leading the owner of the other dog to attack him. While he was being arrested, Weber said Bangor police maced his ADA certified seizure alert service dog.

Weber provided a photo of his dog’s ADA certification to WABI and said he filed a complaint with the Bangor Police Department.
