A wildfire that burned in the Castine woods was extinguished Friday after three days of effort by local first responders.

The fire on roughly 3.5 acres of woodland off of Castine Road was reported Wednesday afternoon. It burned close to the ground and under it, smoldering through tree roots, according to Town Manager Derik Goodine.

“We dodged a bullet on this fire, and luckily, it was contained to 3.5 acres. We learned a few things from this fire,” town officials posted on Facebook, without elaborating.

More than a dozen local fire departments worked for three days to control it. They fully extinguished the fire around noon on Friday, Goodine said. Firefighters will continue to monitor the site for several days in case of future flareups.
