MOBILE, Ala. (WKRG) — Friday marked another milestone in the stripping of hazardous material from the SS United States ahead of it becoming an artificial reef in Okaloosa County.

According to an Okaloosa County news release, the aft funnel, located towards the rear of the ship, was removed. This comes after the forward funnel was removed on Monday, Aug. 4.

The funnels, as well as the remaining prop that was removed, are being preserved to be featured in the SS United States Conservancy's land-based museum.

Fuel from the ship has been removed and the tanks are being steam cleaned, according to the release.

Officials also said there is a lot of wiring that still needs to be removed from the ship before it can be sunk off the coast.
