The nationwide shortage of intravenous (IV) saline has resolved, the FDA announced on Friday.
The shortage of sodium chloride 0.9% injection products in part stemmed from damage in late September 2024 to Baxter International's North Carolina plant , which was hit with flooding from Hurricane Helene's rain and storm surge.
Shortages spurred hospitals to conserve their IV saline supplies, advise patients to manage their hydration by drinking more water or Gatorade, and led to the cancellation of elective surgeries in some cases.
In May, Baxter International announced that inventory levels at the facility had been fully restored .
