CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) - A permit submitted for a private dock along the Ashley River is stirring up opposition in Charleston, as some say it could strip away public access to downtown waterfront views.

The river along Lockwood Boulevard and Broad Street is a popular place for walking, running, and taking. Still, the proposed dock has community members worried that the public space could be lost to private interests.

The Beach Company applied for a permit to build the private dock on the Ashley River for residents of the Jasper Luxury Housing Complex, which would lead to obstructed views and restricted waterfront access.

"I feel like locals aren't being prioritized," said Charleston resident, Claudia Penner.

It's an area locals, visitors, and the Lowcountry community utilize daily.
