The victim of Pueblo's eighth homicide of 2025 has been identified by the Pueblo County Coroner’s Office.

Merlin Z. Ortiz, 32, of Pueblo, was shot in the 1200 Block of Elm Street on the morning of Aug. 6, the coroner said. He was taken by a private vehicle to a local hospital, where he died from his injury.

The Pueblo Police Department received a ShotSpotter gunshot monitoring alert from the 200 block of Mesa Avenue just after 3 a.m. Wednesday. When officers arrived, they found seven shell casings at the scene, according to a Pueblo PD news release.
