COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KKTV) - An investigation is underway after an inmate died Friday morning at the El Paso County jail.

According to the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office (EPSO), a 33-year-old woman in custody was found unresponsive in her cell just before 5:40 a.m., and deputies and medical staff began lifesaving measures. AMR and the Colorado Springs Fire Department arrived and took over medical care at around 5:54, but the woman was pronounced dead.

The sheriff’s office said the woman’s identity will be released by the El Paso County Coroner’s Office when appropriate.

The sheriff’s office said Sheriff Joe Roybal has ordered an in-depth investigation, which will be conducted by EPSO’s Investigations Division and the coroner’s office.
