After more than seven months of negotiations, Air Canada flight attendants voted 99.7 per cent in favour of a strike mandate on Aug. 5. If a deal can’t be reached between the airline and the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE), workers will be in a legal strike position as of midnight on Aug. 16. How did we get here?
Since the beginning of the year, CUPE and Air Canada have been negotiating a new contract for the 10,000 flight attendants who work for the airline and its discount carrier, Rouge. The previous 10-year agreement expired at the end of March.
