DUCHESNE — A 14-year-old Providence girl who went missing while backpacking in the Uinta Mountains has been found safe.

Maya Suisse was located Friday at 1:15 p.m., according to a Facebook post from her sister, Brittany Suisse. The girl had been missing for approximately a day.

The initial report came in Thursday around 11 a.m. Maya was with a group of seven family members in the Painters Basin area near Kidney Lakes when she left the group to use the bathroom and did not return.

Search efforts by authorities on Thursday were complicated by high winds.

Maya was reportedly found by helicopter. According to the family, when she realized she was lost, she made her way to a trailhead and stayed there until she heard a helicopter.
