For years, Melvindale Police Officer Matthew Furman was considered a cash cow for the city, bringing in $500,000 a year in towing fees, more than any other cop.
But he also had a violent side, prosecutors say, and it may be catching up to him.
After years of escaping prosecution over alleged assaultive behavior — like busting a man’s head open while putting him in his patrol car — Furman was back in court this week, accused once again of using excessive force on the job. He has been cited for this at least seven times during his storied career and still has his job, though Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy has him in her grips again, and it may cost him his badge and freedom.
The embattled 40-year-old lieutenant was arraigned on Friday, Aug. 8, on a fresh batch of misconduct and assaul
