LANSING, Mich. — Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer signed an executive directive Friday asking the state's insurance department to help residents access affordable health insurance amid federal changes to marketplace coverage.

The directive asks the Michigan Department of Insurance and Financial Services (DIFS) to educate residents about enrollment options during the upcoming open enrollment period and provide support through a helpline and navigators.

The move comes after Congress passed budget legislation that includes changes to Affordable Care Act marketplace insurance requirements. The changes add income verification requirements for most applicants and shorten the enrollment timeline by one month starting in 2026.
