An officer was injured Friday in a shooting at Emory University's Atlanta campus that ended with the suspect dead.

A DeKalb County officer was injured and was en route to the Emory hospital shortly after the shooting, DeKalb County communications director Dionna Smith said. Atlanta police announced Friday evening that the suspect was dead.

Staff at a deli near campus locked the doors and hunkered down inside. Brandy Giraldo, General Muir's chief operating officer, said staffers inside heard a string of gunshots.

“It sounded like fireworks going off, one right after the other,” she said.

Emory is just minutes away from the headquarters of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta.
