The suspect in a double homicide and home explosion in western Iowa has died.

Dennis Burnell, 71, was transported to the Kansas University Medical Center Burn Unit and treated for extensive burn injuries but died Friday, Aug. 8, according to the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation. An autopsy is pending.

Burnell is accused of shooting Brandon Oman, 38, who was pronounced dead at the scene, and his wife, Stevie Oman, 35, who was transported to a hospital but later died.

Authorities were called to a neighborhood in Glenwood, a city about 150 miles west of Des Moines near the Nebraska border, for reports of a shooting. Mills County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to the Wednesday incident as an “active shooter situation," according to Omaha TV station WOWT.
