The Alabama Department of Veterans Affairs is seeking help from the North Alabama community to find land for a new state veterans cemetery.
This effort aims to ensure veterans in the area have a final resting place closer to home. The closest state cemetery to North Alabamians in in Spanish Fort, about 345 miles from downtown Huntsville, prompting the search for a second cemetery.
Brandon Miller, the department's Director of Outreach, emphasized the need for a local cemetery.
“It’s important for the family being able to stop and visit their loved one and to be able to honor them and their legacy forever," said Miller.
The ADVA seeks a land donation for the 40,000 to 50,000 veterans in North Alabama without nearby access to a state cemetery.
“It’s something that the veterans community
