PEORIA, AZ (AZFamily) — Over a decade after a young child was kidnapped and sexually assaulted in the West Valley, authorities have cracked the case.

Peoria police say Steven Lipton, 43, was taken into custody for the alleged crime.

On Jan. 12, 2009, officers received reports of a sexual assault and kidnapping involving an 8-year-old girl near 83rd Avenue and Cactus Road . Police say the young girl was walking to her babysitter’s house when she was approached by Lipton. He reportedly told the child he was a police officer and said it was okay for her to get in his car since “he was a friend of her mother,” court paperwork stated.

The young child then got into Lipton’s vehicle, where he drove them to a nearby construction area. He then reportedly patted her down to “check her for wire
