CHESAPEAKE, Va. — In a string of messages with the City of Chesapeake, veteran Sean Kirkpatrick uncovered that the city is months behind in processing applications for disabled veteran tax exemptions.

Kirkpatrick says back in May, he was deemed fully disabled and was able to apply for full exemptions.

“When I did file the paperwork, I was told that I still needed to pay the taxes that were due back in that first week of June. So, I paid those,” Kirkpatrick said.

Kirkpatrick said he was told he’d be reimbursed for the money he paid. But he said he hasn’t seen those reimbursements and now is owed over $16,000 from the city.

He said he feels for other disabled veterans who may be in the same boat.
