NORFOLK, Va. — Ahead of the potential expiration of enhanced premium tax credits, hundreds of thousands of Virginians who receive healthcare through the Affordable Care Act may be subject to premium increases, data show.

According to an analysis by Peterson-Kaiser Family Foundation of health insurer rate submissions, healthcare providers nationwide with the ACA Marketplace are proposing an average premium increase of 18% for 2026.

That's across 312 insurers encompassing the 50 states and Washington, D.C.

In Virginia, there are approximately 400,000 people who receive healthcare through the Affordable Care Act marketplace. Nationally, approximately 45 million people are enrolled through ACA Marketplace or Medicaid expansion coverage.
