NEWBURYPORT — Between intricate puppets, actors in unique costumes and interactive call-and-response moments, kids attending Theater in the Open’s annual summer arts workshop on Wednesday were all smiles and laughs as they enjoyed a series of children’s stories depicted on stage.

Cars lined the street outside Theater in the Open’s Spring Lane location, a house that has been around for over a century.
