BOSTON — Frustrated by a lack of support on Beacon Hill, a coalition of housing advocacy groups want to take their push to bring rent control to the state’s voters.

The ballot initiative, which began Wednesday, calls for gathering signatures to put a question on the 2026 ballot asking voters to set a limit on an annual rent increases related to the state’s “cost of living” – measured by the consumer price index – with a 5% cap annually.
