WINTER SPRINGS, Fla. – The first phase of a city-wide creek cleanout is now complete in Winter Springs, according to City spokesperson Matt Reeser.

After years of struggling to find funding, the cash-strapped city secured a federal grant and began removing debris from five major creeks in June .

Now, approaching the peak of hurricane season, the work is finally finished.

Winter Springs provided before-and-after photos of the 30,000 linear feet of shoreline cleared of vegetation, fallen trees and stumps and trash.

The five creeks are critical during heavy rainstorms, acting as natural canals to carry water through the city to dump it into Lake Jessup. When they were clogged, that wasn’t happening, causing major flooding during Hurricane Ian in 2022 and subsequent storms.
