ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – The family of a woman killed when trying to get her stolen car back is now suing Albuquerque police and the shopping center where she died. In 2023, 23-year-old Sydney Wilson used a GPS to track her stolen car to this parking lot at Central Ave. and Coors Blvd. She confronted the teens inside her car when then 13-year-old Marcos Barela shot and killed her.
In a new wrongful death lawsuit, the family is suing the owners of that parking lot, saying it's known to be a hot spot for crime, and more should have been done to keep the area safe. The suit names the Albuquerque Police Department, claiming Wilson called police twelve times in twenty-four hours with the exact location of her car, and that APD never provided an adequate response.
