LAHAINA (HawaiiNewsNow) - On Aug. 8, 2023, wildfires devastated Maui, resulting in 102 lives lost, and thousands of homes and businesses destroyed in Lahaina and Upcountry Maui.
Two years later, gatherings in Wailuku and Lahaina honored those lost and offered comfort to those still healing.
In Wailuku, federal, state, and local officials joined community members at the Kalana O Maui building to reflect and remember.
“The resilience of our people has been evident in every step of our recovery,” said Maui County Mayor Richard Bissen. “And [so has] the determination to overcome hardship, to rebuild homes and lives, and to protect the cultural and natural heritage that makes Maui County so extraordinary.”
