WALLOPS ISLAND, Va. (WAVY) — A proposal is on the table to close the NASA Wallops Flight Facility Visitor Center on Wallops Island, on the northern end of Virginia's Eastern Shore, according to federal workers fighting its closure, with a local legislator calling it concerning and surprising.

The workers say that, if enacted would hurt the community, the regional economy and NASA's public mission.

"This closure is not just a bureaucratic reshuffling, it's a devastating blow, delivered with precision, to a community that has loyally supported NASA for generations, said a member of the American Federation of Government Employees union Thursday in a statement.
